Requirements
The SAFE Act requires at least 8 hours of NMLS-approved CE every year: 3 hours of federal law and regulations, 2 hours of ethics (including fraud, consumer protection and fair lending), 2 hours on nontraditional mortgage lending, and 1 elective hour. Our 7-hour CORE course covers the first seven. The eighth is a general elective or a state-specific course. Having additional state licenses may require additional state-specific education hours.
Some do. Many states require their elective hour to be a state-specific course, and a few require more in total: New Jersey and Arizona Responsible Individuals 12, New York 11, Oregon 10, and Washington, West Virginia and Utah DRE 9. Select your state above and the bundle shows the exact hours and courses.
Take the 7-hour CORE once, then add each state’s required course. A state-specific course can also count as the general elective for a state that only needs one undefined hour, so we don’t sell you both. New York is the exception and always needs its own general elective. Licensed in Florida and Connecticut? That’s 7 + 1 + 1 = 9 hours.
Not if you completed pre-licensing education in the same year your license was approved. CE starts the following renewal year.
Deadlines
Before you submit your license renewal. The renewal period runs November 1 to December 31, and NMLS publishes a SMART deadline each year so your credits post in time. Finish early: December classes and course reporting both get busy. Keep in mind some states have early education deadlines, so complete your education early.
Your license can’t renew until the hours are made up. Many states allow a reinstatement period, usually January 1 to February 28, using late CE for the year you missed. Our late CE courses arrive in 2027.
Taking courses
No. Under the SAFE Act’s successive-year rule you can’t take the same course two years in a row. We update our CE courses every year, each with a new NMLS course number.
Yes. Self-paced online and live classes carry the same NMLS credit. Take everything online here, or join a live webinar or in-person class from our live classes schedule.
Yes. Courses marked coming soon are awaiting approval and aren’t included in your price. Everything else in your bundle is ready to buy now.
Credits and reporting
When you pass a course, we report the credit to NMLS for you. Providers have up to 7 days to report, but we report much quicker than that. You can’t submit your renewal until the credit posts to your record.
Log in to NMLS, open Composite View, then View Education Information. Your completed courses are listed under the CE year. Completion details are also in your LockedIn student account.
Your certificate is emailed to you after completion and can also be found under “My Certifications” in your student account.
